In early July 2013, tragedy struck when John Lawless missed a curve and slammed into a car containing 50-year-old driver Fredrick Shelton, his wife Sheri, and their 13-year-old daughter at Bennett’s Crossing on State Highway Route 9. The father died at the scene.
John Lawless, age 37, was charged with one count of death by auto “for causing the death … by operating a motor vehicle in a reckless manner with evidence of intoxication.” He was also charged with two counts of assault with a motor vehicle for causing serious bodily injury to the late Mr. Shelton’s wife and young daughter. Additionally, he was charged with DUI, operating while suspended, reckless driving, and failure to maintain a single lane.
