In this day and age everyone is looking for a deal. Super discount stores like Wal-Mart, Target and Costco have cornered the retail market as they are able to offer the same goods and services but at a fraction of the price. And while this is good for your average everyday consumer; this equation does not add up to a good value when it comes to legal representation! Because while a bottle of Coke or Goldfish crackers are the same product whether you are paying a dollar or five, the skills and services you are going to receive from a lawyer are not.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not telling you to hire the most expensive attorney out there…what I am saying is buyer beware! If an attorney is advertising that they will handle a matter for a substantially lower amount than most attorneys, a red flag should be waving. There is a reason that attorney is willing to charge so much less and nine times out of ten I would suggest that it has to do with experience! I wanted to blog on this topic because I think that it is important for potential clients to know that experience is worth something, especially in the legal field. Often when a client reaches out to an attorney, it is usually because there is a matter of great importance going on in their life. A matter that shouldn’t be entrusted to just anyone, but rather someone that you know has the experience to handle it right.
In December of 2013, the Pennsylvania Superior Court handed down a decision that goes directly to the point of this blog. In Commonwealth v. Britt, the Superior Court denied Mr. Britt’s appeal finding that there was no ineffective assistance of counsel; even though the attorney in that matter had failed to prepare adequately for his client’s case. The attorney had neglected to meet with his client substantively, interview witnesses or investigate the matter. Despite these shortcoming the appeals court did not find that the attorney was ineffective.
When hiring an attorney don’t get blinded by the bottom dollar…remember that you are entrusting a matter of great importance to this person and focus on experience and dedication when choosing your attorney!
